Merlin Brondum Memorial Scholarship

Merlin Brondum passed away on March 15, 2003 after a brief illness at the age of 49. Merlin worked at the Pender Community Hospital for 27 years, most of which were as the Director of the Laboratory. Merlin was a dedicated professional who will best be remembered by the PCH staff as a friend and family member.

This $2500 scholarship will be awarded in Merlin's name to a college student who has been accepted or enrolled into an allied healthcare course of study. Examples include schools of Nursing, Medical Technology, Radiographic Technology, Physical Therapy and Pharmacy. The recipient must be a resident of Thurston, Cuming, Burt, Dixon, Dakota, or Wayne counties.

This scholarship is established in memory of Merlin Brondum's dedication to rural healthcare. The sponsoring organizations include the Pender Community Hospital, Pender Community HealthCare Foundation, Pender Mercy Medical Clinic and Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City.

Criteria for selection include academic performance, healthcare experience, financial need, career objective in rural health care and school/community involvement.   1. The applicant must be a resident of Thurston, Cuming, Burt, Dixon, Dakota or Wayne Counties.
  2. The applicant must be enrolled in an allied healthcare course of study. Examples include schools of Nursing, Medical Technology, Radiographic Technology, Physical Therapy and Pharmacy.
  3. The applicant must have graduated from high school and have completed 30 hours of college credit. Eligibility for scholarship assistance is extended to both traditional and non-traditional students.
  4. The deadline for completing and submitting the application will be April 30. The application should be sent to:

  5. A Committee that includes one person from each sponsoring organization makes selection. Selection will be made and announced in May each year. The Merlin Brondum Memorial Scholarship will be $2500.
  6. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to age, race, creed, religion, national origin, gender, or physical disability.

Criteria that will be considered include academic performance, interest in pursuing a rural healthcare career, enrollment in an allied healthcare profession, school and community activities and financial need.
