Roger Mazour Memoriam

In Memoriam ROGER MAZOUR 1942 --- 2005

Roger Mazour, died unexpectedly on April 13, 2005. We at Pender Community Hospital, Pender Care Centre, and Pender Community Health Care Foundation mourn his passing. Roger is survived by his wife Lynn; his son Mark Mazour and wife Laura and grandson Joseph; daughter Patti Heitzman and her husband Mike and grandsons Colton and Alex; daughter Jill Turner and grandchildren Dominique and Kimari; his brothers David and Leonard Mazour and sister Janice Spurgin. He is also survived by a huge family of employees, board members, and friends at Pender Community Hospital, Pender Care Centre, Pender Community Health Care Foundation, and Mercy Medical Center.

Roger began as administrator at Pender Community Hospital in 1997. During his tenure, he participated in many capital construction projects. These included the construction of the outpatient wing, building the helipad, the lab relocation and remodeling, the addition and remodeling of the Pender clinic building (which he also was involved in helping the foundation purchase), redecoration of patient rooms, and remodeling of medical records and radiology areas and acquisition of an on-site CT scanner. Many of these projects would not have been possible without Roger's insistence on a strategic plan.

Roger was also responsible for many other improvements and initiatives. He championed the Service Care program at the hospital. He was instrumental in setting up the Merlin Brondum Memorial Scholarship. Roger determined the necessity for the designation of our hospital as a Critical Access Hospital. He also set up a performance-based evaluation process for employees. Much equipment has been purchased at Pender Community Hospital and Pender Care Centre, thanks to Roger's development of an active facilities planning committee and capital budget process.

One of Roger's dreams was to develop a retirement community in Pender that would be served by the health care facilities in the area, so that people would not have to move away from Pender in their golden years. Roger worked hard to facilitate the purchase of the Pender Care Centre to accomplish part of that goal. The next big project planned is for Assisted Living. Roger's legacy was not any one thing, or building, or process that he helped to make happen. His legacy was his kind and tender manner that inspired others to work as hard as they could to accomplish goals that served us all.

"To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition-this is to have succeeded.." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Roger Mazour certainly succeeded, and the hospital district is better for it. He will always be remembered.
