Mike Johanns, Governor of Nebraska, made a brief stop at the Pender Care Centre and Pender Community Hospital on Friday, August 27, 2004. The Governor was in the Thurston County area during the day.

The Governor introduced himself to each of the Care Centre residents and visited with them for a short time. The Governors visit with Delphia Hoppner, mother of former gubernatorial candidate Bill Hoppner, brought back warm memories for Johanns.

Many staff members had the opportunity to visit with Johanns and the Governor posed for photos with several employees. Board members Lynette Roth, Steve Hansen and Brian Kent welcomed the Governor.

Johanns went from the Care Centre to the Hospital and toured the facility. The tour featured the Outpatient Specialty Clinic, Surgery, Laboratory, Mammography Room, CT Scanner and Birthing Room. The Governor was impressed with the generosity of the Community in raising over $1.1 million during the 1997 Capitol Campaign.

The governor had the opportunity to discuss the impact of the State Grants with Bioterrorism Coordinator, Don Pearson.

The governor was very impressed with both facilities and asked if PCH was a Critical Access Hospital. He believes this program has been very beneficial to the rural hospitals in the state.
